Applied Behavior Analysis

If teaching in a ‘regular classroom’ is a challenge, imagine how much more challenging would teaching a class with an exceptional child be.The PSYC 315 class had the opportunity to explore some of the principles and skills required to help and teach (functional skills) a mentally retarded child. Different functional skills were role-played with the use of Applied Behavior Analysis where a particular target skill is identified and broken down into many sub-steps before the teacher closely works with a child on mastering each step involved in a target skill.

  1. Most important thing: 1) See the child – not the disability. Show that you care and have achievable hopes for him or her 2) Find out what they are good at – everyone has a strenght – always start with their strength so that they can experience MASTERY – they get to experience that they are in fact capable of doing things which will keep them motivated in their learning experience and will boost their self esteem. 3) Start tackeling their weaknesses by finding out what they are interested in and try to combine these… If for example a child with Asperger syndrom knows nothing better than cars, try to use that interest when you teach him mathematics…. remember being very concrete and breaking steps down as was mentioned in the article!
